New RadTech study outlines pathway to lower-carbon coil coating

A new study from RadTech, the industry association for UV and Electron Beam (EB) curing technologies, highlights how radiation-curing processes could help accelerate decarbonization in the coil coating sector. The report, Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Radiation Curing Technologies for Coil Coatings, identifies the energy required to heat steel substrates in conventional curing processes, known as the "Steel Penalty," as a major source of emissions and energy consumption.

The life cycle assessment was developed with input from the IONOMY ™ ecosystem partners. According to the study, technologies such as UV, EB and Excimer curing can significantly reduce reliance on natural gas while lowering CO₂ and VOC emissions, without compromising the high production speeds required by coil coating operations. The report also explores practical implementation pathways, from hybrid curing approaches through to fully radiation-cured systems.

As sustainability targets become increasingly important across the value chain, the findings provide valuable insight into future opportunities for reducing the environmental impact of coil coating processes while demonstrating the value of cross-industry collaboration in advancing more sustainable manufacturing solutions.
