Carbon neutrality & science-based targets
AkzoNobel is leading the paints and coatings industry in climate action. In 2017, we committed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In 2021, we set an SBTi-approved (Science Based Targets initiative) target to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 (compared to 2018 levels) across our operations (Scope 1 and 2) and value chain (Scope 3). Our efforts have earned us recognition with top-tier sustainability ratings from EcoVadis, MSCI, and Sustainalytics.
Sustainable Product Portfolio Assessment (SPPA)
Since 2010, AkzoNobel’s SPPA methodology has been used to assess the sustainability of our entire product portfolio. Developed with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), SPPA identifies risks and benefits within the market, guiding our sustainability-driven marketing and helping customers make eco-friendly choices.
As part of our ongoing SPPA analysis, we continuously address materials of concern. For example, we strive to make our coatings PTFE-free and ultimately PFAS-free, ensuring compliance with regulatory and environmental standards.
Global Weathering Program
Through our Global Weathering Program, we subject our products to extreme climates worldwide, proving their durability and longevity. This rigorous outdoor testing ensures our coatings last longer, require less maintenance, and contribute to more sustainable end products with lower environmental footprints.
Solvent recovery: Advancing circularity
At our Hilden facility, our solvent recovery unit installed in 2022 helps reduce site waste by nearly 50%. This innovation has saved around 1,872 tons of waste annually and significantly cut solvent-related costs, supporting the circular economy and advancing our sustainability goals.
